Benin is a country in Western Africa with a population of 8,078,314. The birth rate is estimated at 38.1 births per 1,000 population and the mortality rate at 11.94 per 1,000 people; the country population growth rate at 2.674% (2007 est.). Life expectancy is 53.44 years (52.28 years for males and 54.63 years for females). The total fertility rate is 5.08 children born/woman (2007 est.), and infant mortality rate is 77.85 deaths/1,000 live births (male: 52.28 years, female: 54.63 years, 2007 est.) The prevalence of HIV/AIDS in adult population was estimated to be 1.07% (2006), with 68,000 (2006) people believed to be living with HIV/AIDS and 9,600 (2006) people have died in the pandemic. There are about 62, 000 children living with HIV/AIDS (2006) and 9,800 orphaned by AIDS.
